Health and Social Care – Level 3
What is the Certificate in Health and Social Care?
This qualification covers the practical skills and knowledge needed to care for others in a wide range of health or social care settings. It is a competence based qualification for those who wish to work in a senior role or offers progression on to the Extended Diploma. It confirms competence in these areas for roles such as a senior care assistant, support worker, key worker or healthcare assistant.
Why should I study this qualification?
A career in care can be varied, ranging from social work and nursing to community based careers. With a health and social care qualification, career opportunities are possible in many care environments, including hospitals, day centres and residential homes. This course is suitable for those who currently work in a health and social care setting and have additional responsibility above that of basic care.
Course structure and content
With guidance and encouragement from your tutor you will take part in a range of written and practical activities in the classroom as well as attend a work placement 1-day a week. This course is part-time for 35-weeks and the course content is as follows:
- Promote communication
- Engage in personal development
- Promote equality and inclusion
- Principles for implementing duty of care
- Principles of safeguarding and protection
- The role of the health and social care worker
- Promote person centred approaches
- Promote and implement health and safety
- Promote good practice in handling information
A number of additional units will be chosen to meet your individual learning requirements.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed in the workplace using a range of methods including observation and knowledge work that will cover workplace performance and best practice outcomes. With the support of your tutor you will prepare a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the subject. Your portfolio must be submitted at the end of the course in order to gain the qualification.
Attendance for this course is part-time over 35-weeks and it includes a work placement of 1-day a week in a health or social care setting. You must also attend a theory session for 3-hours each week, based at the college or at one of our community learning venues. You are expected to complete any work that your tutor sets and will need to allow a further 4-5 hours. It is essential that you aim to achieve 100% attendance to achieve this qualification.
A Level 2 qualification in health and social care is required and you must be working in health or social care or have arranged a voluntary work placement for 1-day a week before starting the course. A positive attitude to work and learning is essential as well as the ability to use your initiative.
This competence based qualification can provide progression to further qualifications at Level 4 in the same and related subject areas.
