Child Development – Level 1
What is the NOCN Award in Child Development?
This course provides an introduction in working with children aged from birth to five years. It aims to develop a basic knowledge and understanding of the needs of young children and will help you to understand the role of supporting children’s development. It considers a variety of children’s settings to include playwork, out-of-school and early years. It is classroom-based and provides an ideal starting point for anyone interested in working with babies and young children in an educational or childcare setting.
Why should I study this qualification?
If you have a genuine interest in working with young children and supporting their development then this course could be suitable for you. As a Level 1 part-time course it would be suited to those who are unable to commit to full-time study.
Course structure and content
You will initially complete assessments in literacy and numeracy in order to determine your current level of ability. This will enable your tutor to meet your specific needs throughout the course and provide additional support if required. With guidance and encouragement from your tutor you will take part in a range of class activities and complete set tasks. This course is 12-weeks and the content is as follows:
- Developing Skills for Listening to Children
- Understanding Play
- Parenting Skills
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed by your tutor on set written and practical tasks and with support and guidance you will compile a portfolio of evidence. This will include all of the work you have completed and it must be submitted at the end of the course in order to achieve the qualification.
This is a 12-week course and you will be expected to attend a 2-hour session each week. It is essential that you aim to achieve 100% attendance. Your tutor may set work to be completed between sessions and you should allow a further 1-2 hours a week.
There are no formal entry requirements, just a genuine interest, positive attitude and commitment to completing the qualification is required.
On successfully achieving this qualification you may have the opportunity to progress to a Level 2 Certificate, with further progression to a Level 3 Diploma. You must have an excellent attendance record to progress to the next level.
