What is the NCFE Award in an Introduction to Health and Social Care?

This qualification is aimed at people who would like to develop their knowledge of health and social care (adults and children and young people), early years and childcare. You will gain an understanding of the similarities between these settings and be introduced to the common principles and values.

Why should I study this qualification?

If you would like to pursue a career in health and social care or in a children or young people’s setting this qualification provides a good starting point. It is suitable for those interested in working in a hospital, care home, day centre, crèche or nursery.

Course structure and content

You will complete initial assessments in literacy and numeracy to determine your current ability. This will enable your tutor to meet your individual learning needs and identify the need for additional support if required.

With guidance and encouragement from your tutor you will take part in a range of written and practical activities in the classroom. This course is for 10-weeks and the course content is as follows:

  • Understand the range of service provision and roles
  • Understand the principles and values
  •  An additional optional unit will be included.

How will I be assessed?

Your tutor will assess you on set written and practical tasks and with the support of your tutor you will prepare a portfolio of evidence. This will include the work you have completed throughout the course and will demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the subject.  Your portfolio must be submitted at the end of the course in order to gain the qualification. 

Course commitment

Attendance for this course is part-time at 2-hours a week for 10-weeks. You are also expected to complete any work that your tutor sets and will need to allow a further 1-2 hours a week. It is essential that you aim to achieve 100% attendance.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements, however you must have a genuine interest in working with people and be empathetic and understanding of peoples needs.

The fee for this course is TBC.


On achieving this qualification you may be given the opportunity to progress to a Level 2 Certificate in preparing to work in adult social care. Alternatively you could apply for an Apprenticeship in health & social care.
