What is Core Maths?
Core Maths is a one-year course that is taken as an additional support course. Students focus on solving mathematical problems within real-life contexts.
This course will equip you with the quantitative, problem solving, statistical and comprehension skills required for future studies and/or employment.
The Algebra option is also an excellent support for subjects that require algebraic techniques to for example Engineering, Geology, Applied science, Medical science, Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Business studies or Accounting
Why study Core Maths?
Learn how to manage money: from understanding student loans, calculating national insurance and income tax payments, to developing an understanding of how interest rates are applied to savings and loans.
Develop your critical analysis skills: by evaluating and criticising statements made in news headlines and articles supported by statistical analysis, this is maths that helps you see what’s really going on in the world around you.
Employers want employees who are analytical and data-confident, but also able to think outside the box. Fermi estimation is a skill developed on the course that demonstrates logical thinking and structuring clear mathematical arguments.
Is Core Maths right for you?
This course is suitable for any student with a Grade 4 or above in GCSE Mathematics.
If you are studying a subject where algebraic techniques are important, this is an excellent support course to help deepen your understanding of the mathematical skills needed in that subject area.
If you enjoy mathematics and problem-solving but do not intend to study the subject at A level, then this course is for you.
“Core Maths has helped develop some skills and topics in other STEM subjects, e.g. laws of indices and logarithms in Engineering. It (unexpectedly) enforces one to read carefully – so it increases the ability to pause and process the question rather than jumping straight in. If you do not want to study A level Maths or Further Maths, but you would like to study maths where some application of real-life principles is included, then Core Maths is for you.”
Orelo, Year 12
