Core Maths (Statistics) – AQA Certificate Level 3

Exam board: AQA

What is Core Maths?

Core Maths is a one-year course that is taken as an additional support course. Students focus on solving mathematical problems within real-life contexts to increase their confidence in using mathematics
This course will equip you with the quantitative, problem solving, statistical and comprehension skills required for future studies and/or employment.
The Statistics option is also an excellent support for subjects that require statistical analysis to for example Psychology, Geography, Sports studies, or Biology.

Why study Core Maths?

Learn how to manage money: from understanding student loans, calculating national insurance and income tax payments, to developing an understanding of how interest rates are applied to savings and loans.
Develop your critical analysis skills: by evaluating and criticising statements made in news headlines and articles supported by statistical analysis, this is maths that helps you see what’s really going on in the world around you.
Employers want employees who are analytical and data-confident, but also able to think outside the box. Fermi estimation is a skill developed on the course that demonstrates logical thinking and structuring clear mathematical arguments.

Is Core Maths right for you?

This course is suitable for any student with a Grade 4 or above in GCSE Mathematics.
If you are studying a subject where statistical analysis is important, this is an excellent support course to help deepen your understanding of the mathematical skills needed in that subject area.
If you enjoy mathematics and problem-solving but do not intend to study the subject at A level, then this course is for you.

“Core Maths has been helpful in Psychology and Biology. It was helpful in both by introducing the normal distribution curve, and in Psychology it had reinforced drawing graphs. My favourite topic on the course has been Fermi Estimation because it seems to be most useful in day-to-day life. I have used it most outside of class. Do it if your course needs maths, because it does make it easier in the lessons as you know what you are doing.”
